We Perceive God by Faith
Clearly, our relationship with God is not just physical, material, or intellectual; our relationship with God is spiritual; and the Spirit life, and the life is mind. As God indwells our spirit, His Spirit transforms and renews our mind to be more and more like Christ Jesus; and with the mind of Christ, we therefore possess a natural knowledge of God that is revealed through faith. Here we have a relationship of faith and reason. We come to God, who is a God of reason, only through faith.
Beginning with the first commandment we find evidence for faith and reason. The verse states, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30)
We can, therefore, say that faith is the divine work in us, and it changes us from sin and death to life in Christ. When we have God in our minds, His spirit controls our attitudes and our behaviors; and when the Spirit of Christ is in control, we don’t walk around seeking to be like everyone else around us; we are not to be conformed to the world. As Christian believers, we are now seeking to be who we really are as the Holy Spirit is transforming and renewing our minds, so we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
While it is true we are saved through faith, there are two presuppositions for us to accept Him: We have to believe there is a God, and we have to believe that God rewards those who sincerely seek Him. It is critical to understand though, that faith does not negate reason; it overrides reason. So always remember, our relationship with God is not physical, not material, not even intellectual; our relationship with God is spiritual.
You are to personally understand that God wants to communicate with you because He values your mind. Moreover, you are created in the image of God. This includes, among other attributes, the ability to reason; hence God also tells you, “Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord, Through your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow; through they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isa. 1:18). So it is clear that the conflict is not between faith and reason, but between faith and sight.
