Closing the Gap for African Americans in Healthcare

African Americans make up only five percent of the workforce of healthcare professions that require a medical degree according to the South Carolina Budget and Control Board Research.  Now a new endowment could balance the disproportionate representation of African Americans in the medical arena.  Closing the Gap in Healthcare Incorporated together with several community organizations are proud to announce the Thaddeus John Bell Scholarship Endowment of the Coastal Community Foundatiion.  It is designed to provide money for African American students pursuing a health profession degree at any of six colleges at the Medical University of South Carolina.
“While this scholarship will offer finanacial assistance, it’s going to take the collective efforts of the community to create an environment that encourages an interest in the field of medicine, especially in the mindsets of the younger generation,” says Dr. Thaddeus John Bell.  Bell is a local family physician and the Associate Dean for Diversity in the College of Medicine at M.U.S.C. He says his special concern for health disparities within the African American population prompted the establishment of Closing the Gap in Healthcare Incorporated in 2002. It serves as a vehicle for delivering health education and health disparity abatement program. Its outreach efforts provide health care tips and health news via public service announcements reaching over 70,000 people a month.

While seed money was provided by Select Health of South Carolina, several corporate, private and local sponsors including Motley Rice have donated generously to this worthwhile initiative. An inaugural reception to launch fundraising efforts will take place on Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Convention Center, 5055 International Boulevard North Charleston. Tickets are $75.
